This Spring, eighty-five 4th grade students at Chautauqua Elementary School have been studying the birds of Vashon-Maury Island with the help of volunteers from Vashon Audubon. This program has been conducted at Vashon elementary schools for more than twenty years.

Art is bursting out all over!

The Spring 2012 Vashon Island Art Studio Tour will be held on two weekends, May 5th-6th and 12th-13th, 10-5 each day. It’s a free, self-guided event with 20 participating studios.

The Holiday 2011 Vashon Island Art Studio Tour will be held on two weekends, December 3rd and 4th and 10th and 11th, 10-4 each day. It’s a free, self-guided event with over 40 participating studios. Follow the numbers designated on the Studio Tour map which is available online at www.VashonIslandArtStudioTour.com and at most island businesses. There are many studios to visit, a few of which are profiled below.

 

Banana Dance for Kids: Mondays, Oct 17-Dec 17. Ages birth-5, from 3:30-4:15pm, ages 6 & up from 4:30-5:30pm, at Hanna’s Barn, Pt Robinson Rd on Maury. Kid’s inspire the direction of the class as we roll, jump, interact, create dances and play, with dance artist Karen Nelson assisted by musician and mover, Larry Browning. Fee by donation. VAA pays homage to Hollywood for this year’s art auction when over 130 pieces of art star in the 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, free blockbuster preview party. Nosh on marvelous morsels in a Taste of Vashon, rub elbows with famous Island artists and view all the art in the Island’s biggest annual gallery opening.

Tickets are available now for Vashon Allied Arts’ 2011-2012 Arts & Humanities Series, a five-event, 7 p.m., Sunday evening series, held at Blue Heron Art Center. Designed to spark the imagination and enhance understanding and appreciation of our cultural landscape, the first of five events will take place November 13,with Portland filmmaker Joanna Priestley.

Vashon Allied Arts invites Vashon Island and Northwest artists to submit art in any medium for Blue Heron Gallery 2012 monthly gallery exhibitions. VAA exhibits comprise two to three artists or group shows with occasional solo exhibits in a wide range of mediums and subject matter. Group exhibits with guest curators are welcome.

Performing artists who live on Vashon are invited to apply for Vashon Allied Arts’ New Works Series 2012, and join a long tradition of innovative New Works performances. VAA New Works Series was established in 1989, as a creative vehicle for Island resident artists to present new work.

We are in a time of change. Oil is running out, and increasingly our quest for oil damages the environment. Everytime I go to the grocery store, the prices are higher. The climate is changing. Old ways of doing business don’t always work anymore, and the traditional way of putting profit first has damaged our environment, our culture, and now our economy.

The 2011-2012 season includes A Christmas Carol, Sherlock’s Veiled Secret, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. Drama Dock’s Youth Theater Initiative will present Godspell and All-Night Strut.

Vashon Allied Arts’ annual Art Auction celebrates the glamour of classic Hollywood, 5:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24. Mingle with stars, sip on fabulous cocktails, discover rising new artists and nosh on marvelous morsels!

Claire Green, Island artist will have a solo show at Vashon Presbyterian Church during Strawberry Festival. Hours will be 9am-5pm Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday.

Garden Tour is almost here! Vashon Allied Art’s 21st annual Garden tour takes place this weekend, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, June 25 & 26. Since tickets are valid for both days, you’ll have plenty of time to savor the details of six totally different private Island gardens.

The Vashon Island Quilt Guild is in its final preparation for the ninth biennial quilt show, to be held June 25th and 26th   at the Vashon High gymnasium. The show theme is “Life in Stitches”.

Discover Monet’s Passion, Saturday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m., when celebrated author Elizabeth Murray will talk about Monet’s color theories, design elements and use of light and shade, along with development and maintenance of Monet’s estate.

Vashon Allied Arts opens its doors for the annual Archives Art Sale this weekend. Discover a bounty of treasures Friday through Sunday, May 27, 28 and 29, thanks to Island artists who have cleared their storage places and studios.

Merna visits two primary classes and two upper elementary classes and sets up for Tom’s visits and generates poetry writing toward younger children presenting at the Thursday evening open mic on May 26.

Following the earthquake in Japan, many Carpe Diem families expressed an interest in doing something that would help students make sense of the tragedy while somehow doing something to help the children of Japan. Carpe Diem’s response is another amazing project that has shown how talented and compassionate our kids and their teachers are when they come together for a worthy
cause.

Summer’s on the way and so the 21st Annual Vashon Island Garden - opportunity to stroll through six beautiful private Island gardens, view (and purchase!) original garden art, hear live music by local musicians and pick up gifts for your favorite garden lovers.

The Vashon Poetry Fest will produce its second bi-annual literary festival devoted entirely to poetry. The events begin on Thursday, May 26 with a variety of poetry readings and workshops happening in Vashon town-center through Memorial Day, May 30.
