After lots of work installing the motor in the wagon and managing all kinds of logistics we made it to the NW Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Kent. Since we are local we were able to get in line really early and therefore score a fantastic pit area, close to the starting line and right on the the path to the grandstands.

Amanda Knox, our local lass who’s murder conviction is on appeal in Perugia, Italy, won’t be in court again until September 5th, so while we are recessed I’d like to chat about something that has been on my mind as I have researched Amanda’s case; her plight has continually reminded me of personal safety and awareness of surroundings.

Amanda Knox’s dad, Curt Knox, has said these words over and over from the moment she was arrested for the slaying of her roommate, Meredith Kercher. For nearly four years he and his entire family have sought the truth of how Meredith died and now the Perugian courtroom, resided over by Judges Claudio Patrillo Hellmann and Massimo Zanetti, would listen to the long-awaited Independent Review.

Vashon’s own drag racing team is entering the second half of an eventful season of NHRA drag racing. We started in Boise, Idaho at the NHRA Division 6 race with Brutus, our newly completed 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II Stock Eliminator car advancing to the third round with partner Mark Maez behind the wheel.

Truth is such a rare thing; it is delightful to tell it. ~~Emily Dickinson

July 4, 2011, Perugia, Italy. Curt Knox and Edda Mellas were informed that their Slander trial would begin January 2012. Charges stem from a 2009 interview with a British paper in which Curt and Edda repeated Amanda’s charge that a female officer struck her twice during the illegal interrogation.

"Amanda Knox is just one person. She is not a war or an oil field. But in a spectacle that has unfolded before the eyes of the world, the rights, under Italian law, of that one American citizen have been trampled on beyond belief. The ongoing neglect of American consular officials in Rome to address this injustice sends a high profile message—our government officials are too busy taking care of business, to take care of our people

Fireworks season is upon us once again. The community of Vashon did a great job last year keeping safe during fireworks season with no fireworks related incidents requiring anything more than a band aid. For the last six years Vashon’s fireworks related incident rate has been very low which is common where fireworks are thoughtfully regulated by the government.

The Vashon Youth Council announced today that they will officially close on July 29, 2011 after 12 years of service to the Vashon Island community. For several years the organization has struggled to raise sufficient funds to continue operations

The Monster of Florence was a heinous serial killer who mutilated his female victims and terrified Tuscany from 1968 to 1985; it is now the most famous cold case in Italy. Here in the Puget Sound, we knew this fear from the 70’s to the 90’s as two serial killers left their mark upon our lives, but we never expected a twist of fate to link us to a foreign murderer.

These are not the best of times—there’s enough bad news to make us all, either pull our hair out or just pull the covers over our heads, roll over and groan.  The pictures coming out of Japan after the recent earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis are terrifying and remind us of how vulnerable we all are to the forces of nature.

Curt Knox, Amanda’s father, was back in Perugia for the beginning of her Slander trial and for a hearing on her continuing Appeal.   She and her friend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2009 and they have repeatedly asserted their innocence.
