The Senior Center and Vashon Park District are working together to purchase accessible senior-friendly outdoor exercise equipment for Ober Park. Earlier in the year, Vashon Park District secured a grant to replace some of the failing children’s equipment and to make the playground more accessible for young people with disabilities. The grant will also pay for two pods of outdoor adult exercise equipment to be placed on the outskirts of the concrete path surrounding the playground. A raffle will raise funds for a third pod of accessible senior-friendly exercise equipment to make the area “Every Body’s Playground.”
CC Stone and Andrew Niss have generously offered seven nights on their exquisite two-bedroom houseboat True Love in Amsterdam to help raise funds for senior exercise equipment at Ober Park. CC notes that senior playgrounds have popped up all over Europe and Asia, and they are catching on in the U.S. The adult playground equipment often allows 2-3 people to exercise together at a station so that exercising becomes a social event. A Vancouver pharmacist has been a vocal proponent of senior playgrounds arguing that older adults can often decrease their need for medications through exercise!
Support Every Body’s Playground by purchasing a $50 raffle ticket for 7 nights in August 2020 on a beautiful Amsterdam canal aboard the True Love. The houseboat comfortably accommodates four people. One bedroom has a king bed, the other a queen and there are two private bathrooms with showers. The winner will also receive $2,500 in cash for travel expenses and fun. This package is worth over $6,000! We will sell no more than 500 tickets. Beginning December 4, purchase tickets at the Vashon Park District Administration office at 17130 Vashon Hwy SW between 9-4, Monday through Friday or at the Senior Center 10004 Bank Road 9-3, MTW&F. The winning ticket will be drawn at 1PM on February 14th at the Senior Center. You do not have to be present to win.
People who have stayed aboard True Love rave about it. Tom Langland said of his and Mary’s stay, “For starters, the True Love is located ideally in the old part of the city, on a quiet canal surrounded by classic and vintage Dutch Architecture. Nearby are the endless canal-side cafes and fine eateries, cheese shops, small food markets and boutiques. If the 10 to 15 minute walk to the major museums, town square, coffee shops and red-light district bother you, the light rail to virtually every attraction in Amsterdam is just a few blocks over. You cannot run out of things to do in this neighborhood during a week-long stay, even if you never slept.”
A raffle ticket would be an incredible holiday gift!
