Writer / Director Robin Swicord (Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Memoirs of a Geisha, Matilda) has graciously offered to let us screen her new film “Wakefield” before its LA and NY premieres on May 19th. 100% of the proceeds will go to Vashon Community Care! Robin will do a Q&A after the show.

Zero Waste Vashon is celebrating Earth Day on the GreenTech movie night Tuesday, April 18th at the Vashon Theater.  Starting at 6 pm, we are showing the documentary Trashed. Some of us don’t think twice once the garbage is out of the house, but your neighbors in ZWV are working to reform the current model creating garbage.  Like our local efforts, this movie tracks trash deposits and efforts to reduce waste.

This documentary film tells the story of Earth’s source of fertility.  The fate of humans has always been linked to dirt, our planet’s skin. Soil is alive, teeming with organisms typically so tiny we ignore them.  Stories from around the world show how we can re-connect in a beneficial relationship to our soil.

Occasionally, a woman takes up a movie camera. Occasionally, she turns her lens to capturing her own life, or the life of friends, or the lives of women we don’t often get to see.  Such are the films in LunaFest, a festival of short films by, for, about women, coming to Vashon Tuesday, February 7th at Vashon Theater as a fund-raiser for the Vashon Resettlement Committee.

Under the watchful gaze of our 4K cameras Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “La Belle FerronieĚre” is removed from the wall, packed and sent by plane to Milan where, on the occasion of EXPO 2015, the most important cultural event of the year will be inaugurated: “Leonardo 1452- 1519”, one of the most decisive exhibitions ever to be held on Leonardo.

“Our Stories, Our Voices,” is part of the Old Lesbian Oral History Project (OLOHP) produced by the Women of Puget Sound Old Lesbians Organizing for Change (PSOLOC).  The film is designed to develop a cost- effective outreach to better the lives of older lesbians, particularly those who are isolated, invisible and vulnerable.

Vashon Film Society wraps up summer with a celluloid bow and presents its tenth annual Outdoor Movie Night at the historic Vashon Theatre on Saturday, August 27. 

Vashon Film Society wraps up summer with a celluloid bow and presents its tenth annual Outdoor Movie Night at the historic Vashon Theatre on Saturday, August 27.  

VFS will screen the 1971 classic family  musical “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” the magical original film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s novel. The free screening outside under the stars next to the Vashon Theatre hopes to provide “a world of pure imagination” for all audience members.

Krisha arrives at her sister’s home for Thanksgiving with part of her dress caught in the car door. The camera follows her as she makes her way to the front porch with reckless determination, where she nervously prepares to see the family she abandoned years earlier.

Kaufman, the inventive screenwriter of “Being John Malkovich” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” has teamed with co-director Duke Johnson, to bring this tender and strange stop-animated story about a lonely man’s existential crisis to the big screen.

The film chronicles the 40-year love story between Filipino American Richard Adams and his Australian husband, Tony Sullivan. In 1975, thanks to a courageous county clerk in Boulder, Colorado, Richard and Tony were one of the first same-sex couples to be legally married in the world. Richard immediately filed for a green card for Tony based on their marriage.
