Once upon a time, Susan Hanson ran Vashon Island High School and co-directed its musical productions. She retired just before the new theater opened at VCA, and luckily Drama Dock snagged her to debut the Island’s newest stage.

Once upon a time, Susan Hanson ran Vashon Island High School and co-directed its musical productions. She retired just before the new theater opened at VCA, and luckily Drama Dock snagged her to debut the Island’s newest stage.
Her work turned the Broadway musical Chicago into a sold-out series of performances. Now Hanson follows up on that success with Little Shop of Horrors.

The Vashon High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dan Baker, will present its annual spring concert on Tuesday, March 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Vashon High School Theater.   The ensemble will perform pieces prepared for a band competition that it will be participating in next week.

Vashon Island Chorale in partnership with Vashon Center for the Arts presents its Fourth “Occasional” Trivia Night on Friday, March 17 with proceeds benefiting the Chorale’s orchestra fund. The event begins at 7 pm in the lobby of Vashon Center for the Arts and is open to the public.   A light snack will be provided and beverages, including wine and Cliff’s “St. Paddy’s Day Green” Beer will be available for purchase. Additional food items will be for sale.

St. John Vianney Catholic Church is presenting a Lenten concert of sacred music, March 4, 2017 at 7:00PM, at the church: “Tenebrae: Prayer in Song”.  
The Season of Lent is an important period in the yearly calendar of the Church, a time of spiritual renewal through prayer, fasting and good works set amid the first green buds and yellow daffodils of early spring.

Dr. Albert Paugh is flunking retirement. After selling his Vashon Island veterinary practice, he soon finds himself not only lost without his work, but suddenly single. His efforts to carve out a new life, both as a bachelor and a retiree, only leave him feeling like his golden years are fast becoming years of gloom.

That’s right, Vashon’s 8-Word, 8-Day Poetry Open Mic is back!

Inspired by the folks who, a dozen years ago, talked and read poetry at the Poetry Salon and Poetry Open Mic at Vashon Bookshop and at the Tea Shop, the Open Mic then settled in at Cafe Luna for nearly 5 years.  Now, the popular Open Mic will make its comeback, Thursday, January 26th, 6:30 p.m. at Vashon’s most welcoming community space, Vashon Library.

But wait a second.  “What exactly is an 8-Word, 8-Day Poetry Open Mic?”  you might ask.

Winter at VCA means it’s almost time for The Nutcracker! To match the beautiful new theater, VCA Center for Dance is creating brand new props, flats and a backdrop. We’ll even have a new tree!

All the new sets and props are being designed and created by Robert Wright and his daughter, Julianna Wright (who will also perform). Everyone involved is very excited to kick off our first Nutcracker in the professional performance space with a whole new look.

COMEDY NIGHT IS COMING !!!  First Friday, December 2nd at 8pm, at the Red Bicycle Bistro and Sushi bar.  The evening is osted by local humorist and provocateur, Steffon Moody, and features an All-Star crew of locally famous on-island comedians, plying their craft as only locally famous amateur comedians can ply.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Benjamin Bunny have delighted children for generations, and are combined in a puppet show to reveal the beloved world of Beatrix Potter. After Peter sneaks into Mr. McGregor’s garden for some delicious vegetables, he realizes that he lost his new blue jacket.  How will he get it back?

In Oklahoma in the 1930’s, “The Cyclone Line” was a name for the telephone when it was used to pass information on the all-important weather; the tornadoes, the elusive rain, and the devastating dust storms. Kat Eggleston has written many songs inspired by her father’s memories of the Oklahoma dustbowl, and the songs have now grown into a play with music.

Season tickets are now available for Vashon Chamber Music’s 2016-17 series at the Katherine L White Hall.  Artistic directors Rowena Hammill and Douglas Davis present four concerts of classical chamber music, beginning with “An Evening of Schubert and Schumann” on October 2nd at 7:30pm.

Vashon’s own lyric soprano, Holly Boaz, will sing songs of Schubert and Robert and Clara Schumann, while Seattle Symphony artists will join pianist Jessica Choe for the exciting Schumann Piano Quintet.

Dance! Vashon brings Roald Dahl’s “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” to stage at the Vashon High School Theater this weekend, June 24-26.  The production is the 20th show directed by Vashon Dance Academy Artistic Director and Dance Teacher Cheryl Krown and Co-Director/Teacher Julie Gibson, featuring over 100 Vashon dancers, from ages 3 to adult.

Dance! Vashon brings Roald Dahl’s “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” to stage at the Vashon High School Theater this weekend, June 24-26.  The production is the 20th show directed by Vashon Dance Academy Artistic Director and Dance Teacher Cheryl Krown and Co-Director/Teacher Julie Gibson, featuring over 100 Vashon dancers, from ages 3 to adult.  The performance is an annual favorite, renowned for its creativity, colorful costumes, giant sets, humor, and student contributions.
