Christmas Tree

By Yvonne Higgins Leach

after Connie Wanek

To stand tall but not in earth
to survive in plastic and faucet water
to live for wearing colored lights
to ignore the four walls and no sky
to show off ornaments and still be simple
to be evergreen and oxygen and holiday spirit
to bless the one family who picked you.

“Christmas Tree” is after another poet, Connie Wanek, who constructed a poem in a similar format but about a different topic. I have always appreciated my Christmas trees for giving me such joy during the holiday season.
